Get to know our Principal Civil Engineer, Steve Evans, located in our Perth head office in Western Australia. Hear how self-made people inspire him, how his son made him laugh whilst on a recent cruise and his favourite quote by Yoda.
What is your role at Engenium?
I am a Principal Civil Engineer. My role involves managing the Civil Team in Engenium’s Perth office.
What are your areas of speciality and expertise?
I specialise in the design of earthworks and roads in the resources and transport sectors, both nationally and internationally.
What projects are you currently working on?
Lots of numerous small projects primarily in the resource sector. We are also currently doing a lot of projects for the CBH Group as part of their five year planned expansion of their grain storage and handling network.
What do you enjoy about working at Engenium?
The people at Engenium make it an enjoyable place to work. The social club is very active and we have enjoyed some great functions. The company is expanding rapidly, which brings with it some great opportunities.
What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?
I kind of fell into Engineering. I chose to study Engineering primarily through a process of elimination. I liked mathematics and solving problems which made engineering an obvious choice. Upon graduating I thought I would be a structural engineer, however there were very few jobs for a structural engineer at that time and so I accepted a job as a civil engineer and have never looked back.
What is something you love to do outside of your work life?
I love to watch or play any sport, go to the movies, travel and catch up with friends.
What makes you laugh?
That’s easy, my kids. The latest gem was from my son. We recently went on a cruise and before we left he asked me “what happens if I dive into the pool when the ship is moving and the pool moves?” He thought that he might miss the water and land on the paving surrounding the pool. You can’t help but laugh.
Who is someone that inspires you?
Any self-made person. Typically these people have taken a chance on some venture or idea, backed themselves and ultimately have become successful through perseverance and persistence. Something that I hopefully will achieve one day.
What is your favourite quote?
Some of my favourite life quotes are “put yourself in their shoes” and “treat others the way you like to be treated”. My other favourite movie quotes are “Live long and prosper” (Spock) and “Do or do not. There is no try” (Yoda).
