Neville Dowson has been a Process Engineer at Engenium for many years.  As an expert in mineral processing, Neville is well respected in the industry. What Neville doesn’t know about mineral processing, isn’t worth knowing.

Usually a very private kind of guy, we managed to coax Neville into participating in this month’s quick chat interview. So please read on and get to know him a little better.

What is your role at Engenium and what does it involve on a day to day basis?

I am the Principal Process Engineer in Engenium’s Perth office. This involves determining the ‘How are we going to do this?’ type questions, and then documenting them. I also get involved in due diligence and review projects answering the ‘Why did they do that?’ questions.

What do you consider to be your areas of speciality and expertise?

I have a focus in the mineral processing field, mostly equipment related.  I am not a gold, iron ore, base metals guy, or any other type of ‘guy’. I look at the kit we use to do the job required and how to use it best.

What projects are you currently working on?

I was asked to take on the Process Lead position on Fortescue’s Eliwana project to get through detail design. I had worked on the feasibility study previously and came back to the project after some time. This is a very exciting stage as it involves a lot more coordination with other disciplines than a conventional process related project.

What do you enjoy about working at Engenium?

Engenium’s culture is focused on being able to speak to anyone, anytime, so you can always get assistance if needed. There is usually an element of fun and amusement on the floor which improves personnel relation.

What inspired you to pursue a career in your field?

I developed an interest in science at an early stage and when chemistry came into the program it clicked. That said, I did not want to wash test tubes for ever so the lab had no interest for me. A school counsellor suggested Chemical Engineering, which was closely related to Metallurgy. I ended up studying it in Kalgoorlie where my family lived. That worked out well.

What do you love to do outside of your work life?

At this stage outside work focusses on family and home, interspersed with travel to warmer climates. I like Latin and rock n’ roll dancing but do not get much chance these days.

What makes you laugh?

I like things where the humour is not laid on but needs a bit of thought. Irony works well for me.

Who inspires you?

Hard to narrow it down as it depends on what part of my life I am in at the time. My parents were a great inspiration personally but various mentors over the years have been great in my professional development as well.

What is your favourite quote?

There are many I use but I always come back to Confucius; “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
