Jim Lai is a Lead Civil Structural Engineer in our Brisbane office with expertise working on multi-level frame building structure designs in the mining sector.
“I have always been involved in the structure design of multi-level frame buildings for mining infrastructure and I would say I’m pretty good at it”, say’s Jim. “Most of the structures that I am involved in are complex as they involve many disciplines for their design and construction requirements. Large vessel and equipment loads, dynamic effects, and modularisation and construction limitations are just a few of the challenges that come with the design.”
“My parents inspired me to pursue a career in engineering because, unlike me,
they never had the opportunity to receive a good quality education”.
On a day to day working week, Jim’s role includes assisting in the preparation of proposals, as well as detailed design and IFC (issued for construction) drawings. His design activities would generally include preparing MTO’s (material take-offs), budgeting, site visits, steel and concrete civil designs, supervision of designers, reviewing designs for accuracy and completeness, and liaising with clients on design matters to ensure they get a value-added result.
“I’m currently working on an oily water management and improvement project”, say’s Jim. “We are assisting the client in seeking a design solution for the improvement and minimisation of oily water discharge to meet their environmental requirements.”
“I love going to the beach, especially beach resort holidays
where I can just relax, swim and buffet breakfast!”
Fresh out of university, during the junior days of his career, Jim worked for a construction company as a Site Engineer building high rises.
“I was involved in daily site inspections to ensure all pre-concrete pours were in compliance with the engineer’s drawings and specifications. It was a great learning curve for me, it showed me how things are built on site, which helped me later in my career as a Design Engineer. I truly believe you become a better engineer after you have worked on site.”
Outside of work Jim is a keen gardener and golf enthusiast.
