
Phil Baker - Senior Study Manager - Brisbane Office
Phil is a Metallurgical Engineer with a Bachelor and Master of Engineering Science degrees from the University of Queensland. His career spans some 40 years', beginning with Alcan at their semi-fabricated products plant in Sydney and their research and development centre in Banbury, United Kingdom. After completing his Master of Engineering Science degree Phil joined Comalco's reserach and development centre in Melbourne, where he worked on the development of new continuous casting and melt treatment technologies for primary aluminium.
Returning to Queensland Phil worked on Consulting projects with the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at QUT. After a year with QUT Phil joined CSIRO at Pinjarra Hills and was dedicated to the development of magnesium casting and melt treatment technology development for the Australian Magnesium Research & Development Project (AMRDP).
After some 5 years' with AMRDP Phil joined Canadian consulting engineering firm Hatch at their head office in Toronto to continue work on magnesium, aluminium and titanium projects. Phil became an Associate of Hatch and worked across the Hatch projects and global offices for 20 years' before retiring at the end of 2016. During that time he has often worked at overseas locations including substantial time spent in China.
Since retiring he has continued to work on lithium projects on a casual basis and now with Engenium is expanding his exposure to include high purity alumina and vanadium pentoxide. Phil’s present career activity is motivated by the rewarding experience of working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams that design, build and commision process plants.
